Prop 39 Zero Net Energy Schools - Pilot Program

Proposition 39, the California Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2012 (Prop 39), provides up to $550 million per year to improve energy efficiency and increase the use of clean energy in public schools and community colleges. The Prop 39 ZNE Schools Pilot will assist schools in retrofitting existing facilities to ZNE by leveraging Prop 39 funding. Interested schools are encouraged to revisit this website for updates.

  • Zero Net Energy Schools Awards and Recognition

California is leading in the transformation of K-12 and community colleges to zero net energy (ZNE) performance.  To recognize leading schools, districts and individuals, the first-ever California ZNE school awards and recognition program has been launched.

ZNE schools are high-performance buildings that combine energy efficiency and renewable resources to produce at least as much energy as they consume annually. To honor early innovation and leadership in this market, the state’s investor-owned utilities (IOUs), the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and other agencies are launching a ZNE awards and recognition program to showcase the people, buildings and policies that are driving this new standard for school environments.

A zero net energy (ZNE) building generates as much energy as it consumes annually. With energy bills at California’s schools totaling more than $700 million a year, innovative energy solutions for schools like ZNE buildings are being proposed as a way to save energy and put money back into classrooms.

To help schools achieve successful ZNE retrofits, we’re offering the following upcoming no-cost ZNE workshops...

  • Case Studies: Zero Net Energy Non-Residential Buildings
    April 12, 2015

Six non-residential buildings were designed and built to perform at zero net energy (ZNE) consumption over the course of a year. Extensively monitored under the Pacific Gas & Electric Company's ZNE Pilot Program, each has proven to meet or exceed that level of performance for at least one year of post-construction occupancy.

These case studies show that building industry leaders who target this new level of building performance can meet this challenge, reinforcing California's reputation for being the incubator and early adopter of transformative ideas with practical feasibility.
